Zanes Hero – Mark Herzlich

Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich has returned to the field for Saturday’s season-opener against Weber State after missing the entire 2009 season while recovering from cancer.

Herzlich, the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference defensive player of the year, missed last year as he underwent treatment for a rare form of cancer called Ewing’s Sarcoma.

He led the team out of the tunnel – about 10 yards ahead of the rest of his teammates – and took his helmet off and looked up into the student section, spreading his arms wide, as the crowd roared.

Coastal Carolina at West Virginia

The Carolina Beach Boys take their little Deuce Coupe up the mountains to visit the West Virginia Mountaineers. The Surfer Dudes may have mechanical difficulties as they try to find their sea legs. The mascot for Coastal Carolina is the Chanticleer. I don’t know what a Chanticleer is but I’m pretty people in West Virginia know how to shoot it, fry it and eat it.

New head coaches try to gain the upper hand on their instate rival in their debuts as head coaches. In the back of my mind I can only think of one more thing I would like to see in this rivalry. A MMA fight between Calapari and Pitino.

Coach Kelly begins his reign as head football coach of Notre Dame. I don’t know if he is the next Rockne, Dr Lou or Weis. But he has won everywhere he has coached and for the Irish fans they hope this is the case. For some reason people are forgetting they have a lot of key starters to replace.

Right off the bat, in state rival game. I guess these guys eat dessert before their steak. The Buffalo could be in the mix for the Big 12 North title before they join the Pac 10 next year. Being in the mix for the Big 12 North title is not saying much considering every team in the Big 12 North is somewhat in the mix. Colorado State has given their rival all they can handle in the past so this should be a good game.

The Longhorns take a road trip Enronville to visit the Rice Owls. The Longhorns begin life without Colt McCoy. McCoy made a lateral career move to the Cleveland Browns holding a clipboard for Jake Delhomme. Texas has all of the pieces to continue their excellence on the football field and don’t give hoot who they play.

As far as the game goes if they don’t break out the SPF 40 they could get burnt, but I suspect this will be a good day at the beach for SoCal.
